Our Story – Horseback Riding Farm in Iceland for 6 Generations
In my early twenties, I lived in Stockholm, working as a financial advisor in the heart of the city. Life was busy, fast, and structured — but whenever I could, I escaped to Iceland, drawn to its open landscapes and the strength and gentleness of the Icelandic horses.
Horses had always been my passion, and in Iceland I discovered something more: a deep connection between nature, people, and animals that I hadn’t felt anywhere else. I dreamed of one day leaving the city behind and building a life surrounded by horses, mountains, and open skies.
Years later, that dream came true. Today I run Hestar og Fjöll, a true family-run farm in South Iceland, offering adventurous and authentic horseback riding tours to some of the country’s most breathtaking places — from the black sand beaches and glacial valleys beneath Eyjafjallajökull to the colorful rhyolite mountains of Landmannalaugar.
Our farm, located within easy day-trip distance from Reykjavík, welcomes guests from near and far. My three children are now growing up here at Mid-Grund as the sixth generation, while I dedicate my days to caring for our horses, welcoming riders from around the world, and sharing the beauty of Iceland with our guests.
I run a riding school where I teach riders of all ages and levels — from complete beginners to experienced horse lovers — not just how to ride, but how to truly understand and connect with Icelandic horses. Every horse has its own personality, and when you ride with us, we carefully match you with the right horse for your experience level.
What once was only a dream has now become my everyday life: guiding riders on unforgettable horse riding adventures in Iceland, from calm rides along rivers to horse trekking tours across mountains, glaciers, and black sand deserts. More details can be found in our Horseback Iceland Guide.
At Hestar og Fjöll, we don’t just offer tours — we invite you into our home, our family, and our way of life. This is the spirit we want to share with you when you come to ride with us.
Welcome,
Martina
