🚗 Visiting Us from Reykjavík or Vík
Many of our guests join us from Reykjavík or Vík — our farm is located near Hvolsvöllur, right between the two. It’s about a 1 hour and 45 minute drive from Reykjavík and around 45 minutes from Vík, making it an easy day trip from either direction.
👉 Get Google Maps directions to Hestar og Fjöll
The drive itself is beautiful, following Iceland’s South Coast past landmarks like Seljalandsfoss and Eyjafjallajökull. We’re happy to help with directions or arrange transfers on request.
🧥 What should I wear for horseback riding in Iceland?
Icelandic weather can change quickly, especially when you're out on a horse trekking tour in Iceland. For a comfortable and safe experience, we recommend dressing warmly:
A good wool sweater (great for riding Icelandic ponies!)
Waterproof and windproof jacket
Warm gloves
Flexible and comfortable trousers
Waterproof boots or shoes
We provide safety stirrups, so any type of footwear is acceptable, but warm and waterproof shoes are ideal — especially when you're exploring Iceland on horseback.
What is the weight limit for riders?
For the safety and well-being of our Icelandic horses, as well as the comfort of our guests, the maximum rider weight is 110 kg (240 lbs). Icelandic horses are strong and sturdy, but they are a smaller breed compared to many other riding horses. Keeping within this limit ensures that the horses remain healthy and comfortable, and that every rider enjoys a safe and enjoyable experience.
☔ Do you provide rain gear?
Absolutely! We want your Icelandic horseback tour to be enjoyable no matter the weather. We provide:
Full rain gear
Waterproof gloves
A warm balaclava (to wear under your riding helmet)
This makes your horseback Iceland riding adventure warm, dry, and comfortable — even on rainy days.
When should I arrive for my horseback riding tour?
Please arrive 15 minutes before your scheduled horseback riding tour in Iceland. If you're delayed, just let us know! We do our best to accommodate all riders.
Do you provide helmets?
Yes, we provide helmets for all riders on our horse tours in Iceland — safety is our top priority.
Can I bring small children on a horseback riding tour?
Yes, we love introducing kids to the magic of Icelandic horses.
Children as young as 3 years old can enjoy a guided farm walk with our ponies.
Around 5 years old, they can take a short ride on an Icelandic horse with assistance.
We adapt the horse tour to your child’s age and comfort level — perfect for families visiting Iceland.
❌ What if I can’t join the tour?
We have a 24-hour cancellation policy. If you’re unable to join your booked horseback riding tour in Iceland, please let us know in advance to avoid being charged.

Before every tour, we offer a short but important introduction where we go through how to approach, ride, and communicate with the horse. This helps ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone – whether it’s your first time on horseback or you’ve ridden before.
Our calm and friendly Icelandic horses are ideal for beginners. Plus, you’ll get the chance to try their famous gait, the tölt, which is smooth and comfortable even for inexperienced riders.

🌧️ What happens if the weather is bad?
We ride in most weather conditions — Icelandic ponies are built for it! However, in cases of extreme weather or dangerous conditions, we may need to postpone or cancel the tour. In such cases, we’ll contact you as soon as possible to reschedule or refund your booking.
Can I ride if I have health concerns?
We want everyone to enjoy the magic of horseback riding in Iceland, but safety comes first. If you are pregnant, have back problems, or any other medical conditions, please let us know when booking. 🌌 When is the best time to see the Northern Lights?
The aurora borealis, more commonly known as the Northern Lights, can usually be seen from October through April, with the most reliable conditions between December and February. This spectacular natural light show is created when particles from the sun collide with Earth’s atmosphere, producing glowing waves of color across the night sky. While sightings can never be guaranteed, the experience is truly unforgettable when the sky is dark, clear, and free of clouds. For the latest predictions, you can check updated forecasts here.
