Farm Visit – Horse Farm Experience in Iceland
Experience a closer, more personal side of Iceland’s horse culture. During a farm visit at Mid-Grund, meet, pet, groom, and photograph our Icelandic horses in their home environment. It’s relaxed, educational, and family-friendly — perfect before or after a ride.
Visit highlights
Meet gentle Icelandic horses up close
Learn about daily care, feeding, and tack
Watch a riding school demo (and light participation when suitable)
Peaceful time in the countryside at Mid-Grund (South Iceland)
Great for kids & non-riders; plenty of photo moments
Meet the horses & daily life
Walk through our stables and pastures and get to know each horse’s personality. We’ll show how we rotate pastures, what the horses eat through the seasons, and how we keep them healthy and happy. You’ll hear stories from our multi-generation family and how the Icelandic horse has shaped life here.
Riding school demo & hands-on moments
When schedules allow, you’ll catch a short riding school demonstration — how we warm up, basic aids, and an introduction to the tölt gait. In some sessions, we offer simple, supervised hands-on moments: leading a horse, light grooming, or trying a tiny arena loop (subject to conditions and age limits).
Photo opportunities
From close-up portraits to wide views of mountains and open skies, our farm is full of photogenic spots. We’ll help you find the best angles and calmer moments to capture the bond between people and horses. If you want a dedicated session, see our Horseback Photo Shoot page.
Visitor tips: what to wear & bring
Layered clothing + waterproof outer shell (Icelandic weather!)
Sturdy, closed-toe shoes or boots
Gloves / beanie in colder months; sunscreen & sunglasses in summer
Camera/phone; small daypack
Please avoid dangling scarves or loose items around horses
Duration, groups & booking
Most farm visits last 60–90 minutes. We keep small groups to preserve a calm atmosphere for the horses. Advance booking is required; choose a morning or afternoon slot during the main season. If you’re joining a ride, we’ll help plan the ideal combo (visit + day tour).
Safety & horse welfare
Our horses are friendly but large animals — we’ll brief you on safe behavior around them (quiet movements, no running, mind the hooves). Please always follow your guide’s instructions. We maintain high standards of welfare: appropriate work, rest, vet care, tack fit, and weight/age limits.
From farm visit to riding
Loved your time at the farm? Step into a short day tour along rivers, beaches, or foothills — or plan a multi-day trek when you’re ready. We’ll match you with a beginner-friendly or experienced-rider option.
