The Perfect 4 days Mountain Ride
Starting from Fljótshlið in South Iceland — within easy reach of Reykjavík — this 4-day mountain adventure takes you deep into Iceland’s most breathtaking highland landscapes.
We’ll begin our journey through the woods and the Vatnsdal valley, heading towards the charming cabin Foss, famous for its grass-covered roof and the mighty river nearby. From there, we ride through the mountains towards Hungurfit. On the third day, we’ll cross Krókur and pass through Þverárbotnar, concluding the day with an overnight stay at the cozy cabin in Emstrur. On the final day, we’ll ride over the striking mountain Einhyrning, making our way back to Fljótshlið to close the loop on this unforgettable adventure.
Evenings are spent in cozy mountain huts, sharing meals and stories with fellow riders while our horses rest nearby. This Iceland horseback tour offers a rare chance to connect deeply with the land, the horses, and the timeless traditions of riding in Iceland.

Day 1 - Fljótshlíð - Foss
We meet up in Fljótshlið. From here, we ride through the forests and along Vatnsdal. As we make our way through the wilderness, we pause beneath the mountain of Þrihyrning. We continue our journey, crossing a crystal-clear river before finally arriving at the cozy cabin, Foss, with its grass roof, where we stay for the night.
Distance: approximately 20 km
Day 2 - Foss - Hungurfit
We depart from Foss and head northeast. The first part takes us through grassy trails, past grazing sheep and small streams and waterfalls. We pause under the mountain Hafrafell, where we reconnect with the car. The rest of the day unfolds on gravel roads winding over the mountains, offering stunning views of the rugged terrain.
As we press on, the cabin Hungurfit comes into view, offering a peaceful retreat. Here, we will settle for the night and enjoying the comfort of a shower
Distance: approximately 30 km
Day 3 - Hungurfit, Krókur, Emstrur.
The third day is by far my favorite day. We pack our saddlebags with snacks as the vehicle takes a different route, leaving us for an unforgettable ride over the mountain. Our first stop is in Krokur, a peaceful spot in the heart of the mountains, where we enjoy our lunch by the side of the Markarfljót river. We then continue our journey through Þverárbotnar, eventually arriving at the cozy cabin Emstrur.
Distance: approximately 25 km
Day 4 - Emstrur - Fljótshlíð
We ride from Emstrur, following a different path than the vehicle, and make our way over the mountain. The journey leads us towards the striking Einhyrningur mountain, where we stop for our first break in the quiet beauty of Bolstadur. As the day unfolds, we gradually return to civilization, riding past farms in Fljótshlið. The landscape transitioning from wilderness to peaceful farmland. Finally, we reach our destination, bringing this unforgettable adventure to a close.

More Practical Information:
Riding Equipment and Disinfection
Iceland is, as many know, a country with strict regulations regarding the import of riding equipment. This is primarily because Icelandic horses are not vaccinated against infectious diseases and are therefore very sensitive to bacteria, which in the worst case can make them seriously ill.
Used riding boots, helmets, saddle bags, and similar items must be disinfected before arriving in Iceland. Leather chaps and other leather equipment cannot be brought into the country.
Riding clothes, such as pants, jackets, etc., should be washed and then disinfected with Virkon S or Iodine. More information about disinfection can be found here: https://www.mast.is/en/import-export/import-of-riding-equipment
We provide approved helmets, orange waterproof suits, and a saddle bags for loan, as well as all the necessary equipment for the horses.
Insurance
Remember to take out a good travel insurance before your trip. Please note that all riding is at your own risk. Don’t forget to bring your European Health Insurance Card (E-111 form) in case it’s needed.
Food
We love good food! We use local ingredients whenever possible. Breakfast, a warm light lunch (e.g., soup or stew), and a proper cooked dinner are provided. Please inform us of any allergies or special dietary requirements. Alcohol and snacks/candy are not included in the price.
Luggage
Please pack in a soft and preferably waterproof bag. Try to limit your luggage as space in the vehicle is limited.
It’s also helpful to bring a small day bag for items you may need during the day, such as sunscreen, rain gear, an extra sweater, or snacks.
The number of participants will range from 6 to 15 people.
Payment
The confirmation fee is 30% of the total price and is non-refundable. The remaining balance must be paid no later than eight weeks before the start of the trip, otherwise you risk losing your place.
For those bringing their own horses: The horses are driven the entire way and therefore need to be in good shape and accustomed to 'rekstur.
